Sky Tree

I went to see Sky tree last week.

It is a TV tower which boasts a height of 634m making this tower one of the world's tallest.

It is not open yet, so I could only see it from the neighborhood, but it is still worth a look.

It’s located about 1km east of Asakusa - a town filled with the atmosphere of a shitamachi (the traditional name for the area of Tokyo that extends from Taito, Chiyoda and Chuo Wards east of the Sumida River where many merchants, craftsmen, etc. reside) - and about 2km northeast of Ryogoku - a town famous for sumo wrestling.

The new tower stands in a major traditional and international tourism zone of Japan.

It’s grand opening will be May 22th.

I heard that the tickets have sold out already, but it still nice to see from Asakusa.

The weather has been changing every day, so it is a little hard to recognize that it is already Autumn now.

When you think about Autumn, I think the best way to feel it is from a visual scene.

Therefore, I would like to show you some Autumn leaf coloration.

It is a beautiful contrast of yellow and green.

Also, a nice contrast of color.

It will become winter soon, so those leaves will float with the northerly breeze.

I would like to feel more Autumn before it becomes Winter.

Last week, we had some warm days so it was hard to believe it is already November.

Today it was chilly in the morning and the season is gradually moving to winter.

As Japan moves into winter, the opposite is happening in Australia where it is approaching summer.

Here are some recent photos of Australia.

The view from the airplane is totally different from that of Japan.

When people think of Australia, they imagine sheep.

If you think about the coldness in Japan, sheep have the perfect measures against the cold, which makes me jealous.

It is healing to gaze at such vast scenery.

I can't believe how quickly the time goes by.

When you get out after climbing the escalator & stair, you will see this view.

This is Tameike-sanno Crossing.

Cross the road and you will see a lottery stand and Lawson convenience store.

Then walk along the small road between the lottery stand and Lawson.

After a short distance, at the 7-Eleven, turn right and go straight ahead.

It is a narrow street and you will see a coin parking lot on the right.

If you see this view, you are almost there.

The American embassy will be in front of you, then make a left turn.

Go straight and you will see our sign.

Second House in Roppongi

This is our client’s second house in Roppongi.

We designed this room to be chic and have a comfortable atmosphere.

The furniture, curtains, lighting, as well as the art and mirror, displayed objects and plants - all the fine detail - we arranged in harmony to pull the whole look together.

We placed art on the facing wall of the entrance.

The wooden panels fitted to the living room wall make an accent for the space, and also richens the atmosphere with the feel of luxury.

We would like to introduce our coordination work for one of our clients.

This is their second home located in Aoyama.

Our client entertains a lot of guests because of their business, but we didn’t design it like a meeting space.

Instead, we made a relaxing room with chic taste, so the guests can have a pleasant time.

His wife skillfully arranged lots of flowers and greenery so it looks like a model room.

On the shelf they have arranged lots of photos with nice frames with which we can imagine their broad circle of friends.

For the bedroom we made it like a hotel room with many sets of throw pillows and cushions.

May’s can arrange curtains, linen and cushions to match with your furniture.

It would be nice to change your room image with the change of season.

Sri Lanka Festival at Yoyogi Park

I went to the Sri Lanka Festival at Yoyogi park last week.

When I arrived at around 10:00 in the morning, it was already crowded and there was an appetizing aroma filling the air.

There were lots of booths like the Sri Lanka travel agency and black tea, but what I was really looking for was Sri Lankan food.

Sri Lanka is close to India so their food is mainly Curry but they also have BBQ Chicken and some Sri Lankan soul food.

At the special stage, they were teaching how to pour tea and showing Sri Lankan Terpsichorean art.

On another note, there is a good story about the Ambassador of Sri Lanka.

After the March earthquake and tsunami, some Embassies closed and evacuated their Diplomats to Kansai. However, the Sri Lankan Ambassador arrived in Tokyo as scheduled at the end of March to take up his post. He told the Sri Lankan people living in Japan to stay and help the Japanese people.

The Ambassador went to Fukushima in April and served curry to victims of the disaster.

It was highly unusual for an Ambassador to go to the affected area.

He said that Japan is a true friend that helped us when the Sumatra earthquake hit Sri Lanka.

I sincerely appreciate all the help from the Countries around the world.

Bonsai & Plant Fair

The lingering summer heat finally begins to wane a little as the end of summer approaches.

The weather gradually becomes cooler, giving people a sense of the upcoming autumn.

Last weekend, I was working in the Azabu Juban area and there was a ‘Bonsai & Plant Fair’.

They were displaying and selling the Bonsai from Kawaguchi – Angyo, which is an area with a long history of producing Bonsai and flowers.

There were lots of people, locals as well as people from overseas.

Bonsai sounds like a hobby for the elderly, but nowadays lots of young Japanese and foreigners are interested .

There were lots of various sized and types of Bonsai with explanations in Japanese and English.

Having a plant in your room has some healing effect.

It might be fun to have a Bonsai in your room instead of having regular house

plants.

We would like to introduce our latest showroom coordination.

At May’s, one of our coordinators decides on a new theme for our showroom every 2 months.

We missed showing you our new theme which we changed last month.

August’s theme was ‘Seaside House’.

We have imagined a second house by the sea.

Apart from this layout, there are also other items on display in our showroom.

This month we set up a study room based in white color.

The next showroom change will be in October.

Second House in Karuizawa

I would like to introduce our interior coordination work in Karuizawa.
Karuizawa, 3 hours drive northwest of Tokyo, is known as a resort town and tourist spot because it's rich in nature, is cool in summer, yet has an urban feel.

We went there last month because one of our customers, who had purchased furniture for their house in Tokyo from us before, asked us to do their second house’s interior coordination.

Our customer likes chic and simple design, so we coordinated with high quality, black leather and walnut sofas which match the building. Also, we supplied easy chairs of different designs for added accent.

I wish I could have a house surrounded by lots of greenery, having a relaxing time in the calming space like this in Karuizawa

How was your OBON vacation ?

I hope you are enjoying the heat of Tokyo.

It is really hot every day.

When you go outside, the only word people say is ATSUI (hot!).

You may be back to work from yesterday, having finished your OBON vacation.

OBON is a Buddhist festival to recognize one’s ancestral spirits.

It is believed these spirits return to their families during this period.

People visit their family’s ancestral graves and make offerings of flowers and incense.

Our company, May’s, doesn’t have an official Obon vacation.

We had busy days as usual.

Entrance Lobby Work

This time I would like to introduce our interior coordination work for an Apartment’s Entrance Lobby.

This apartment is in Chuo-ku and they have a spacious lobby.

There were some stools, a table and a shelf arranged but the size balance wasn’t good for the ample lobby.

That’s why we were asked us to change them.

They have a beautifully spacious lobby so we placed a great ‘L’ shaped couch not only for function, but also for design to achieve the visual effect.

The white table looks nice with the black leather sofa.

We also changed the shelf to match the sofa and table, and arranged some interior accessories too.

The left side is ‘before’, and the right side is ‘after’.

We do interior coordination not only for houses and model homes, but also for entrance lobbys as we have shown this time.

Signature of summer

It has already been the second week of August.

We had some mild and comfortable days last week but now we are back to the normal heat.

To get through the heat I would like to introduce you to a signature summer event.

Furin are small bells made of glass, metal or ceramic which are hung from the eaves of houses in summer.

A rectangular strip of paper, called tanzaku, is hung from a clapper and has ancient Japanese poems or verses written on it.

When the tanzaku catches the breeze the bell chimes. In the hot, humid Japanese summer the sound of the Furin sounding in the air is, for the Japanese, a puff of coolness.

There are many kinds of Furin from all over Japan.

Why don’t you try some Furin for your home this summer?

Beware of the ‘Guerrilla’ heavy rain

It's already the final week of July.

We had a nice and cool few day last week caused by a typhoon but now we are back to the normal high heat.

The high heat will continue for another month and then the ‘Guerrilla’ heavy rain will hit us sometime soon.

I don't know when we started to call this ‘Guerilla’ heavy rain but when you experience it, the name is fitting I think.

The picture of the thunder cloud was taken at Yatsugatake. If you see these clouds in the sky, you had better escape!

I wonder how many ‘Guerrilla’ heavy rains will hit us this year?

Hills Marche in Ark Hills

There is a farmer’s market called Hills Marche in our neighborhood at Ark Hills Karajan Place every Saturday. However, Hills Marche is so much more than just a food market. There is also the champagne brunch, fun workshops for kids and even cooking classes.

Last weekend, there were goats and sheep. They had the demonstration of wool shearing with sheep. There was a baby goat, too.

What will be the weather for Tanabata?

Tanabata(七夕, meaning "Evening of the seventh") is a Japanese Star festival originating from Chinese legend. It celebrates the meeting of Orihime and Hikoboshi.
According to legend, the Milky Way (a river of stars that crosses the sky) separates these two lovers and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunar calendar.
The celebration is held at night and it must be a clear evening to view the stars.

In present-day Japan, people generally celebrate this day by writing wishes, sometimes in the form of poetry, on tanzaku (短冊), small pieces of paper, and hanging them on bamboo, sometimes with other decorations.

I saw some bamboo trees at Zojoji and Tanzaku swinging in the wind in this extremely hot weather.

According to meteorological data, in the last 10 years we have been able to see the Milky Way only once or twice during Tanabata.
Although we have extreme Summer heat, the rainy season is not officially over yet so there will be a low probability of a clear night.

Hydrangea has changed color?

During this "tsuyu" period, we can find a lot of Hydrangeas.

They are in blue, pink, cream and also purple.

Hydrangeas change color based on the acidity of the soil.

Acidic soils produce blue flowers, neutral soils produce very pale cream petals, and alkaline soils result in pink or purple.

The fragrance of irises was believed to bring good luck

The rainy season, known as Tsuyu, has begun.

The weather during tsuyu is very unstable and the main problem is humidity. People tend to become irritated by it.

Although, tsuyu is a gloomy time, there are many pretty flowers blooming at this time.
One of them is iris, which is a symbol of the rainy season in Japan. You can view irises in many gardens and parks around Japan.

Above all, we'd like to recommend IKUTA PARK, one of the most cherished park areas in Kawasaki. IKUTA PARK contains 1,200 irises in the Iris gardens, as well as hydrangeas, camellias and azaleas in the citizen’s flower garden. You can enjoy irises with the view of Nihon-Minka-en (Japan Open-Air Folk Museum) where there are many traditional folk houses.

Viewing pretty flowers makes us feel better during gloomy rainy days.

Cherry Blossom season 2011

According to the Japanese Weather site Weathermap, Tokyo's Cherry Blossoms are expected to be in full bloom from the 8th of April.

The best viewing dates are predicted between the 5th and 11th of April.

Over the next week the Cherry Blossoms will be in full bloom in the Tsunami affected areas. Hopefully, the people will get some joy during this extremely difficult time.

Today is the last day of March.

This first quarter of the year has passed quickly, hasn't it?

I would like to share some thoughts about Spring for all of the people affected by the Tohoku Earthquake. I hope these thoughts may help them recover by one minute or even just one second faster.

I hope that the photo of Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) brings a little relief and comfort to everybody.

Actually, I am sorry but the photo is of last years Sakura.

There are two famous Sakura areas near May's office and they will be in full bloom when the weather becomes a little warmer.

When this years Sakura are in full bloom, I will take a photo for you.

I pray that the areas destroyed by the Earthquake and tsunami may enjoy to see Sakura bloom again.

To all the people struck by this tremendous, destructive force of nature, please have a strong spirit and recover your lives positively, step by step.

How to move to Tokyo Part 2. Furnishing your new home.

You have found your new home in Tokyo and soon it will be time to move in. If you have been lucky enough to acquire a fully furnished property then it is time to relax and become accustomed to your new surroundings and lifestyle. However, most of the time your new home will be completely bare. Bare is not a bad thing since you will have full control on the style and type of furnishings to put into your home. And, when I say bare, I mean bare. Apart from needing furniture, household appliances and electrical goods you will possibly need ceiling light fittings and curtains as well...

If you are shipping your furniture to Japan there is always a delay for the furniture to arrive. Unless of course you send it before you leave for Japan. However, most cases will involve you using your furniture just before you leave. There are a few things to consider before you pack all of your furnishings and crate them up.

-Is the value of your furniture worth shipping?
-Will your furniture survive the trip?
-Is the size of your furniture small enough to fit through smaller Japanese size doors, stairs or halls?

I suggest you only ship the pieces that you dearly love. Those are items with such a high sentimental value that you cannot live without. Once you have decided on the furniture you would like to send it is time to see if they are strong enough to cope with the shock of shipping. Once you have deemed the pieces to be hardy enough for the trip, you will need to ensure that they will be able to fit into a Japanese size home. Doesn’t sound easy, does it? Shipping furniture is not a simple task. Furniture that is easy to dismantle and reassemble is your best bet. Otherwise, consider getting your furnishings in Japan.

It is a good thing that Tokyo has lots and lots of furniture and interior shops. There are a multitude of styles and brands available. But, how do you find the time to visit the sofa shops, the bed shops, lighting shops and curtain shops. How about the electrical shop for the refrigerator and huge TV you want with the stereo and surround sound? You will end up pretty confused in a very short time. Wouldn’t it be great if someone could understand your personal taste and help you choose the furnishings you need for free? Well, that is exactly the service that MAY’S offers!

How to move to Tokyo Part 1. Finding your new home.

Are you moving to Tokyo? Or, perhaps you know someone who is. Relocating is exciting and offers many learning opportunities and experiences. However, the initial excitement is soon overshadowed by anxiety. Preparing for a new job, lifestyle and home can be overwhelming. The anxiety is always present whether you are moving to a new suburb, city or country. Here are some pointers in making the transition as smooth as possible from my own experience. Being prepared early will save you a lot of stress later on...

If you are relocating because of work, research the area around your office. A lot of your time will be spent near work. Find the nearest train stations. It is more than likely that you will be using public transport to get around. Cars do not move very quickly during peak hour in Tokyo! The easiest way to scout your new office is to search on Google Maps. For example, try typing in “iidabashi tokyo” and you will be directed to a map of the heart of Tokyo with various places in Iidabashi flagged. Once you have found the stations (Iidabashi Station is a hub with many intersecting train lines) you can see where each train line will lead you. The Tokyo Metro Subway Map and Japan Rail Map links are very handy. Then look for the big city centres. The big city centres will have the largest concentration of shops, eateries and nightlife. Shinjuku and Ikebukuro are directly connected to IIdabashi by subway. It is likely that you will like to live near work and a big city centre.
Use Search Engines to research the surrounding areas and make a shortlist of preferred places. Also write down your office area and activities that are important to your lifestyle. Google Maps Street View is really handy to visualize the areas. Show this list to your real estate agent or relocation company. After taking all of your notes into consideration, they will be able to recommend the most suitable place for your new home. It is quite possible that they may recommend a totally different area to the ones you selected. Remember that they are the local experts and you will be able to understand their reasons because you have already familarised yourself with the Tokyo area. Carefully consider the choices being offered and select the one that best fits your needs. Congratulations! You have found your new home in Tokyo.
